Undergraduate Biological Sciences Education Grant

The Departments of Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Computer Science, Neuroscience and Physics were awarded a grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute to support outstanding undergraduate researchers. This program provides an opportunity for students interested in pursuing scientific research careers to perform a substantial, in-depth research project in the areas of biochemistry, chemistry, and the biological and medical sciences in collaboration with one of our faculty members.

Participants in past programs can keep us up-to-date with their careers by submitting our quick and easy survey.

Program Dates - This program runs from 31 May - 5 August 2004.

Application Materials - Additional application forms can be obtained from the Department of Biological Sciences Main Office or on-line. Please note that the application requires the application form, a transcript, two letters of recommendation, and a written statement of interests and goals. Applications may be submitted by postal mail or by e-mail to hhmi@pitt.edu.

Application Deadline - For the 2004 Summer Fellowships, all application materials are due in the Main Office of the Department of Biological Sciences by 23 January 2004.

Number of Awards - For the 2004 Summer Program, about 14 Hughes Fellows will be selected.

Faculty Sponsors - Applicants must indicate faculty preferences on the application form. For information about faculty research areas visit our web sites:

Applicants may also wish to consult potential sponsors directly to learn more about possible projects. If you are not currently in a laboratory or wish to transfer to a new research area, the Steering Committee will assist you, taking into account applicant preferences, sponsor preferences, and available space.

Requirements - The following activities will be required of the Hughes Fellowship Program participants:

  1. At the beginning of the second week, each Fellow must submit to the Steering Committee a 1-2 page prospectus for a research project to be performed.
  2. At the end of the program, each Fellow must submit to the Steering Committee a written Final Report of activities performed.
  3. Also at the end of the program, each Fellow must present, to the Steering Committee and a larger audience, an oral report of activities performed.
  4. Participants will be expected to evaluate the program and respond to post graduation surveys.

Stipend - Each Fellow will be awarded a stipend of $4000 for the Summer Term.

Certificate - Upon successful completion of the Summer Program, each Fellow will receive a certificate bearing the name of the Fellow, the title of the research project, and the signature of the Howard Hughes Program Coordinator. This certificate may be used in connection with future post-graduate applications. Fellows can also anticipate that their sponsors will generally be well qualified to write letters of recommendation in connection with such applications.
