Lecturer

Dr. Roberts received her Ph.D. in 1992 with William Searcy at the University of Pittsburgh and joined the Department in 1994.

Currently, Dr. Roberts is not accepting graduate students in her laboratory. Dr. Roberts is not accepting undergraduate researchers, and does sponsor students in other laboratories.

Professional Interests of Laurel Roberts

I would characterize myself as an organismal biologist. My interests lie in the behavior of animals and in their physiology. Coursework in behavioral ecology, animal physiology and veterinary pathology paved the way for my interest in these topics as did jobs in the Pathology Department of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and at the Pittsburgh Zoo.

My skills as a research scientist were developed during my graduate program at the University of Pittsburgh in the labs of Dr. William Searcy (now Maytag Professor at the University of Miami) and Dr. James Pipas. My work in these labs was part of my project on the genetic determination of parentage in red-winged blackbirds.

Although my graduate studies were fascinating, during that time I came to realize that my primary professional interest was in teaching. After three years in the biology department at the Community College of Allegheny County, I returned to Pitt in 1995 as a full-time Lecturer. My goal is to mentor my students and guide them during their quest to understand biology.

Courses taught in the last 5 years:

  • Biosc 0150, Foundations of Biology I
  • Biosc 0160, Foundations of Biology II
  • Biosc 0800, Biology for Non-Majors I
  • Biosc 0810, Biology for Non-Majors II
  • Biosc 1210, Vertebrate Morphology Lab
  • Biosc 1250, Human Physiology
  • Biosc 1590, Special Topics
  • CAS 100, Freshman Studies
  • CAS 110, Health Focus
  • Courses taught at other institutions:
    1. Anatomy and Physiology (lecture and lab)
    2. Pre-Biology
    3. Nutrition

In the past, I have been a faculty sponsor for internships at a variety of venues including the School of Medicine (UPMC), Allegheny County Coroner's Office and the Montgomery (AL) Zoo. From 1996 - 2001 I coordinated for the NIH "Bridges to the Future" program run by the Community College of Allegheny County (CCAC) and the University of Pittsburgh. Through this and other initiatives, I hope to increase the participation in the sciences by all segments of society.
