Dr. DeVita is an internist and critical care physician
in the Departments of Anesthesiology/Critical Care Medicine and Internal
Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh.
He has directed the Surgical Intensive Care Unit and the Rapid Treatment
Service at UPMC-Presbyterian, and is Associate Director of Critical Care
Education. He was appointed Chair of the UPMC Ethics Committee in 1992 and
Co-Medical Director of Respiratory Care in 1995. In 1996 he became Co-chair
of the Society of Critical Care Medicine Ethics Committee. Dr. DeVita has
published on non-heartbeating organ donation and
withdrawal of life sustaining therapy. His current research interests are
attitudes and perceptions of persons involved in non-heartbeating
organ donation, and the adequacy of ethics consultations. He directs the
annual UPMC Current Controversies in Medical Ethics Conference.
