The US Peace Corps
(and how you can be cool like me)

Originally: The Peace Corps, as originally envisioned by John F. Kennedy and Sergeant Shriver was a grueling paramilitaryesque experience wherein a volunteer was sent to boot camp for intensive physical training and then released into a village or jungle not to be seen again until two years had passed.

Today: The Peace Corps is a dynamic, expanding cultural broker devoted to 1) Exporting the culture, values, and diversity of the United States 2) Importing the cultures, perspectives, and dreams of other nations and 3) Promoting the sustainable development of nations in need.

So? You should join the Peace Corps.  You have the opportunity to moderate the values and images that the US exports.  Don't like the rest of the world thinking that the US is a cross between Dallas and Baywatch?  Do something about it.  Don't like Wal-Mart and McDonalds acting as the primary emissaries of US culture?  Do something about it.

This year the Peace Corps official recruitment logo is "Redefine your world".  I've got an idea for you: Redefine yourself as someone who gives a damn.
