Like all astrometric systems Hipparcos seems to have been subject to confusion in the vicinity of a bright star (e.g.,. Gatewood et al. 2000, ApJ 533, 938). Above is one of our CCD images of the 9th and 11th magnitude pair Hipparcos 85607 and 85605. For this probable pair the Hipparcos catalog lists parallaxes of 3 and 203 mas for the two stars respectively and proper motions differing by 0.36 arc sec per year. This extraordinary result led Fabricius and Makarov (2000, A&A Suppl. Ser. 144, 45) to a combined study of the Tycho and Hipparcos data of 85605 that resulted in values similar to those of 85607. We were able to preform a simple independent check with a few short exposures in June and August of 2003. With an RA parallax factor difference of 0.7, between the two dates, the original parallax value would have resulted in an additional motion of 142 mas or a change in the proper motion of about 1 arc sec per year. Our data discounts the large motion due to the original parallax, but does not preclude the possibility that the fainter star is a foreground main sequence star. Noting that the relative motion of the two components is still rather large for a binary we will take a few more short exposures on a night during the next season to check this seemingly unlikely possibility.
