Biodegradable Scaffolds in Tissue Engineering
|
|
Small intestinal submucosa (SIS) is a biomaterial with diverse applications in the field of tissue engineering. This collagenous membrane has been cross-linked with compounds such as glutaraldehyde and carbodiimides to increase its mechanical strength. The extent of collagen cross-linked directly affects the scaffold degradation rates. Typically SIS has been cross-linked uniformly, however it can be engineered to cross-link on a gradient. Scaffold degradation rate would then vary throughout the sample since the extent of cross-linking is no longer a constant.
