Dr. Rick Koepsel received his education at the University of Wisconsin, from which he graduated with a PhD in Bacteriology and a minor in Biochemistry. Prior to coming to the University of Pittsburgh, Dr. Koepsel was a Post- Doc for one year at Purdue University. However, he left Purdue to pursue a Post-Doc position in Molecular Genetics at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medical. Before finding his home in the Department of Chemical Engineering, Dr. Koepsel spent some time as a faculty member within the Dental School. Part of Dr. Koepsel’s time is now spent in the classroom, teaching Biochemistry for Engineers, with Dr. Mohammad Ataai, and Introduction to Molecular and Cell Biology, or in the laboratory.

Dr. Koepsel has been a member of Dr. Allan Russell’s laboratory since May 2001 and is involved in several projects in the Lab. Currently, his main project involves the development of coatings that can bind detect and kill bio-warfare agents. In addition, Dr. Koepsel is a collaborator on the project to develop and test surface active biocidal polymers (with Dr. Sand Beom Lee); the dynamic buffering project (with Joel Kaar); and the artificial ovary project (with Matt Heise and Dr. Lisa McGee at Magee Womens hospital).
