Biocatalytic Materials and Coatings

The incorporation of enzymes into polymeric materials has led to the development of biocatalytic gels, foams, and coatings. The preparation of these materials involves the covalent crosslinking of enzyme functional groups with monomers leading to the formation of a bioplastic material. Biomaterials prepared using this method are advantageous since the biocatalyst cannot leach from the material; furthermore, the crosslinked enzyme may become hyperstable and exhibit improved stability to heat, solvents, proteases and bleach. These materials have found numerous applications including use in biocatalytic membranes, biosensors, self-cleaning and self-decontaminating surfaces and “smart” materials.
