Engr 0715 - Engineering Applications for Society

Andy Janaitis

About Me

I currently live in New Milford, a town in Western Connecticut and I am a Freshman engineering student at the University of Pittsburgh. My decision to come to Pitt was mostly a financial one. With the costs of a college education being what they are today, reducing the amount of loans I would need to take out seemed a terrific proposition. That being said, I was also attracted to Pitt's Engineering school and the campus atmosphere. To me it seems that Pitt is a great compromise between the hustle and bustle of a city school and the green areas of a more rural campus. I am currently planning on declaring my major in the department of Industrial Engineering, as, from what I can tell, this field will give me the most opportunity to deal with people on a more regular basis and I would also like to go into the buisness end of engineering as early as possible, an opportunity often afforded to Industrial engineers. Outside of engineering I am very interested in history, especially that of the French and American revolutions. I also absolutely love tennis. I am currently working at a local tennis club in New Milford to become certified as a professional instructor. Ideally, some day I would like to combine my love of tennis with engineering and work for a company like Wilson or Babolat in the production of rackets. Perhaps, eventually, it would be possible to use the generally higher saleries earned by engineers to open my own tennis club as well.

Blueprints at 141 Robinson St.

In my engineering class, Engineering Applications for Society, this semester, I will be working with Katlyn Daniluk, Henry Leung, and Rebecca Terry (all other freshmen engineers), to carry out a service learning project at 141 Robinson St. We will be working with Community Human Services Corporation, CHSC, to create blueprints of the property at that location and to analyze the efficiency of the current workspace there.
