What Types of Jobs do Engineers do?

Environmental
Environmental Engineers think of ways to improve the environment and make it better. The deal with energy conservation, pollution, sewage, storm water runoff, and other environmental aspects. Things we take for granted that are all around us and used everyday are made possible because of environmental engineers.

Additionally, green infrastructure is a big part of environmental engineering. This is the way of the future in urban environments to improve drainage, pollution, and energy conservation. Some types of green infrastructure include green roofs, permeable pavement, and bioswales. Environmental Engineers are responsible for analyzing how effective these structures are, improving them, and designing new green infrastructure.

Structural
Structural Engineers make the buildings, bridges, and other such infrastructure all around us possible. Building are able to withstand large storms because of structural engineers. A structure might look good, but without a structural engineer, it might not be safe or structurally sound.

Structural Engineers design the skeleton of structures to make their existence possible. They analyze data to see how structures can be built to with stand the worst possible situations. Architects and contractors need the concensus of a structural engineer in both the design and building phase to make sure the structure is safe. Furthermore, they inspect these structures throughout the building period to make sure they meet all of the specific codes and standards.
