What do Engineers do?

Engineers are the leaders of design and innovation within our world. They solve societies greatest problems and imrove our quality of life. They think of new solutions to old problems and invent new ways of doing things. They also create brand new devices, machines, and objects that have never been thought of before to enhace our standard of living.

Engineers mostly work with other people and their work environments can vary greatly. Some can work in labs, private offices, consulting groups, or on active construction sites. Their job can also involve much traveling. In general, an engineers job description and work environment can range from a number of things which makes this career so versatile and a great choice for many people. Some of the fields of engineering include:

  1. Civil/Environmental Engineering
  2. Mechanical/Materials science Engineering
  3. Bioengineering
  4. Chemical Engineering
  5. Electrical Engineering
  6. Engineering Physics
  7. Industrial Engineering
  8. Computer Engineering

Civil/Environmental Engineering

Civil Engineering is one of the broadest fields of engineering. It mainly deals with urban infrastructure and other related areas. There is also a huge demand for civil engineers world wide. Some of the different fields of civil engineering includes:

  1. construction
  2. environmental
  3. water resources
  4. geotechnical
  5. structural
  6. urban planning
  7. transportation

While I am unsure if I want to be an engineer, environmental or structural are the two fields of civil engineering I am considering. I want to improve urban infrastructure while improving the environment. I like buildings and other structures, and I think that if we incorporate green infrastructure into everyday structures, it will be very benificial to us and the environment. Things like green roofs, bioswales, and permeable pavement, can greatly improve cities, reduce pollution, conserve energy, and drastically improve living conditions.
