Facilities/Equipment

As a major research university, the University of Pittsburgh houses a wide range of laboratory facilities, equipment, and expertise, some of which is directly accessible to those outside the University community. To help foster and facilitate collaboration between the University and industry, The Technology Commercialization Alliance has compiled a searchable database of such facilities and equipment, including contact information, details about the research that is conducted there, and, where appropriate, pricing information.

You can search the database from the TCA home page using the name of the facility or keywords that describe the type of facility and the kind of analytical instrumentation and other equipment available. If you search without specifying a keyword, your result will be a complete list of available facilities, equipment, and expertise. As new facilities and equipment become available, the TCA will continually add them to the database.

If you need additional assistance in your search, you can contact the TCA at 412-624-4474 or by e-mail.

Materials Micro-Characterization Center (MMCC)

  • X-ray diffraction – Two Philips X’pert difractometers (handles powder and temperatures to 1600 C and thin film attachment and a Eulerian cradle for crystallographic textures)
  • Scanning Electron Microscope (Philips XL-30 field emission scanning electron microscope with detectors for imaging in SE and BSE mode, compositional analyses by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and collection of electron bean backscatter patterns (EBSP). Spatial imaging resolution of 2 nm and detection of elements of Z=6 or larger. Orientation imaging microscopy (OIM) for measuring crystallographic textures.
  • Transmission Electron Microscopes – Two 200kV scopes having line resolutions of 0.14 nm. The JOEL 200CX is capable of diffraction contrast imaging, selected area diffraction, and magnetic domain imaging. The JOEL 2000FS STEM features analytical TEM attachments for thin window EDS and electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) for chemical characterization for areas as small as 15 nm
  • Scanning probe microscopy – A Digital Instruments Dimension 3100 scanning probe permits atomic force microscopy (AFM) scanning tunneling microscopy, STM, and magnetic force microscopy (MFM)
