Search Process Update: Sept. 11

SUBJECT: The Chancellor Search Process

With the conclusion of the University Senate election, the membership of the Search Committee that will be assisting the Board of Trustees in identifying a candidate for the next chancellor is now complete. The members of the Committee, along with highlights of each member’s experience and expertise, are listed on the Chancellor Search web site (www.pitt.edu/chancellor-search/committee), which is now live.

This is a very strong committee comprising, as it does, individuals who share a demonstrable commitment to the success of the University and who bring a wide variety of knowledge and skills to the task at hand. The professional diversity of the members, coupled with the regional, national, and international perspectives that they bring to the table, will be a valuable asset in our ongoing search. I, along with the rest of the Trustees, look forward to the advice this Committee will provide as we move forward with the important task of selecting and recruiting a new chancellor who can build upon the progress the University has made in recent years.

In addition to the helpful insights that we expect to receive from this broad-based search committee, I and my colleagues on the Board also look forward to input from the University community—faculty, staff, students, and alumni—at the 14 search forums that we will be holding. The forums will be here on the Pittsburgh campus, at the four regional campuses, and in cities across the country, from New York to San Francisco. The first forum will be in the William Pitt Union Assembly Room at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, September 18. The remaining forums will be held throughout the rest of September and the first week of October. A complete list of forum dates and locations is available on the Chancellor Search web site (www.pitt.edu/chancellor-search/forums).

We are committed to progressing swiftly so that we are in a position to recruit the best candidates from the pool of individuals nationally and internationally who would be capable of leading our great University. Once the forums are concluded, as I mentioned in my last communication, we will be moving out of the highly visible stage of the search process, into the period when the need for confidentiality for the candidates is essential to attracting the very best candidates. Therefore, much of the ensuing search activity, especially as it relates to the confidentiality concerns of the candidates, will not be publicly available. Rest assured, however, that throughout the months ahead, the Board’s commitment to bringing the search for the next chancellor to a deliberate, swift, and successful conclusion will continue unabated. I assure you, as well, that throughout this period I will keep you informed as circumstances allow.
