David Turnshek
Pitt astronomer David Turnshek identified the most distant galaxy known.

Powerful new methods of studying the distant universe, including space telescopes like the Hubble, have led to rapid advances in observational cosmology. Turnshek, at the forefront of studying galaxy formation, uses all of the major ground-based telescopes in Arizona, California, and Chile; he is also a major user of the Hubble space telescope.
