Ditka was drafted by the Chicago Bears in the first round (fifth overall) from the University of Pittsburgh. His impact was immediate—he caught 56 passes and earned NFL Rookie of the Year honors. Mike played six total seasons with the Bears, and earned Pro Bowl honors each year.

The final tribute to Ditka's playing career was bestowed upon him when he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame on July 30, 1988.
