Samuel Langley
Samuel Langley, Pitt astronomer, flew the first power driven, heavier than air machine.
On May 6, 1896, Langley launched his prototypean unmanned, steam driven, quarter-size aerodromeinto the sky from a secluded spot along the Potomac River in Washington D.C. Aerodrome Number 5 rose into the sky and flew at 25 mph for over a minute. On November 28, 1896, Number 6 flew 4,200 feet at about 30 mph.
