I. SCOPE

This policy establishes the University of Pittsburgh's right to
control the use of the University name, logos, trademarks, and
service marks; the nature and quality of goods or services with
which they are associated; and, in order to achieve uniformity of
presentation of the marks, the artistic form in which the marks
     are reproduced.

It applies to identity marks (whether registered or not), adopted
or used by the University as word marks, such as "UNIVERSITY OF
PITTSBURGH," "PITT," and "PITT PANTHERS," and others containing
graphic components in addition to the words, such as the
University seal, a representation of a football helmet or a
     representation of a panther.

II. POLICY

     Commercial Use

No one may request or authorize a vendor to put University
identity marks on products, unless the vendor is officially
licensed by the University. All such licensing is controlled
exclusively through the University Trademark Licensing Program,
which maintains a list of currently licensed vendors. Only the
Director of the Trademark Licensing Program is authorized to
grant a license to use University identity marks on commercial
     products.

No one may use, or authorize licensed vendors to use,
University's identity marks in a form that differs from the
     officially sanctioned identity marks.

     Internal Use

University identity marks on products that are solely for
internal use, such as stationery or business cards, or for free
distribution, such as catalogs, promotional publications, or
other University publications, must be in conformity with the
officially sanctioned identity marks. The Office of University
Relations maintains the University's current identity marks.

To ensure control over the reproduction of University identity
     marks:

     - All University printing must be coordinated through Central
          Printing

     - All official literature and promotional material must be
          coordinated through University Relations

     Independent Organizations' Services or Activities

University Counsel must review and approve in writing any request
for the use of University identity marks by independent
organizations, in connection with services or activities, or in
any context other than affixing the marks to commercial products.

     Unauthorized Use

Any member of the University Community who becomes aware of the
unauthorized use of University identity marks by a third party is
responsible for notifying the Director of the Trademark Licensing
     Program.
