Opportunities

The department offers programs leading to the MA and PhD degree in German and participates in the Cultural Studies and Film Studies Programs, in which students may prepare graduate certificates at the MA or PhD level. On the master's level, we offer a track in combination with the TESOL Certificate (Teaching of English to Speakers of Other Languages) and an Accelerated Certification Track towards earning the Pennsylvania Instructional Certificate 1.

Graduate Program Application Requirements

All applicants must apply online.

Applications require:

• Application Form
• Statement of Intent
  • Please describe your background, research interests, and academic goals.
• 3 Letters of Recommendation
  • Letters should come from academics who have an ability to speak to the applicant's performance and skills.
• Transcripts
  • Applicants who already have an MA should supply their undergraduate transcripts as well.
  • Non US degrees like Zwischenprüfung, Staatsexamen, Magister must have English Translation
• Tape, CD, Audiorecording
  • Non-native speakers should supply a recording during which they 1) speak freely about a topic and 2) read formally a passage from a literary or academic text.
• Writing Sample
  The writing sample should be a research paper or selection from a thesis of about 20 pages. It should offer an example of the applicant’s ability to conduct research and provide evidence of strong writing skills. It may be in either English or German.
  
• GRE – not required
• TOEFL – required of Foreign Students - Please make sure that permission is given to the University of Pittsburgh to access these scores
• Application fee is $50. Please contact the Director of Graduate Studies if this represents a financial hardship.
