Vernell Lillie

Vernell Lillie is an associate professor of Africana studies. She holds both a doctorate and a Master of Arts degree from Carnegie Mellon University in English. In addition she has been trained in psychodrama, playback theater, and problem-solving theater by Louis Yablonsky, Zerka Moreno, James Slack, Hannah Weiner, and Megan Givinish.

Her academic foci are in the humanities (Black literature and theater) and in psychodrama. In 1974 she founded the Kuntu Repertory Theatre with Rob Penny as playwright-in-residence.

Among Kuntu's past productions is August Wilson's critically acclaimed Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, directed by Lillie. In 1986, she was awarded the University of Pittsburgh Chancellor's Distinguished Teaching Award.
