Graduate

The Department of History requires the following materials in an application for admission into the M.A. or Ph.D. program:

  • Your on-line application. All applications must be submitted on-line. Please send a check in the amount of $50.00, payable to the University of Pittsburgh. If application fee is not enclosed, your application will not be processed.
  • Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores (aptitude section only).
  • A “Career Statement,” that describes the basis of your intellectual and professional interest in history. What are your primary areas of interest and competence within the field of history?
  • Three letters of recommendation from former teachers or others who can evaluate your intellectual and academic qualifications for graduate study.
  • An official academic transcript from the college/university at which you completed your work for a B.A. degree; an official academic transcript covering your M.A. work, if you have an M.A.
  • A sample of your written work, preferably on a historical subject: this could be a term paper, M.A. thesis, or publication.

Foreign applicants must also provide the following additional materials:

  • The International Graduate Student Supplemental Information Packet. Please download this form.
  • An evaluation of your proficiency in English, as measured by the “Test of English as a Foreign Language,” (TOEFL), administered by the Educational Testing Service, Princeton, New Jersey, U.S.A. You should inquire at your university for the date and place of examination in your locality.

Deadline for all applications is January 15th. Applicants who wish to be considered for financial aid should check the appropriate box on the application.

With the exception of the on-line application, your application materials should be mailed to: Graduate Secretary, Department of History, University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, Pa. 15260. All materials must be received before we can evaluate your application.

Decisions on both admission and financial aid will be announced around April 15th.
