TEACHING:
As an instructor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing,
I am responsible for the new Trauma and Emergency Preparedness
Clinical Emphasis within the Acute Care Nurse Practitioner Program.
Through this emphasis students will learn Disaster and Mass Casualty
Care through the course Fundamentals of Disaster and Mass Casualty
Care and Acute Trauma Care and Emergency Medicine through the Trauma
and Emergency Preparedness Clinical Emphasis. They will experience
disaster response with hands on use of a TVI Decontamination tent,
PAPR hood assemblies and TYVK suits. Students will also utilize SimMan for
computerized emergency experiences.
SERVICE:
I have worked in search and rescue and
disaster management for the past 15 years within the Tri-State
area. Besides experience with pre-hospital emergency medical treatment,
I have particular interest and expertise in tracking, team management,
diving and technical rescue. In early September, following the
Katrina Disaster along the Gulf Coast, I responded with my search
and rescue team and part of the Red Cross to provide relief efforts
to victims in Waveland and Pearlington MI.
