1025 Exploring the Japanese Language and Mind

32927 Nishi (ThTh 1-2:15)

1. How does the use of Japanese language or the communication pattern reflect Japanese culture? How do socio-cultural aspects of the Japanese language interact with how children learn Japanese as a native language? What are the factors that determine the success or failure of learning Japanese as a second language? This course addresses such questions by exploring the relationship between language and thought through the study of the use and acquisition of Japanese.

2. Prerequisite: none.

3. No recitations.

4. Expected class size is 30 students.

5. This is the first time this course has been offered in several years. It may not be offered again in the near future.
