|
They were the children of immigrants who came to America with
little more than strong beliefs and the will to work.
One of them founded a business that made his name famous
around the world. His sons and grandsons repaid their blessings by having a
lasting impact on their community and the nation.
The family philosophy was based on a simple motto that would
set their course for five generations and into the future. |

Flying off the Bridge to Nowhere! |
Author: |
WQED 13 |
format: |
VHS |
Info: |
|
Pittsburgh is often called The City of Bridges, and it's easy
to see why. With three mighty rivers and lots of hills and valleys, the area
around this city is the site for many outstanding bridges with innovative and
beautiful designs. From the old Smithfield Street Bridge to the new Veterans
Bridge over the Ohio River between Wheeling and Steubenville, these structures
have challenged and delighted generations of engineers who have worked here. And
there are lots of great stories about these bridges, includeing the tale of the
Pitt student who drove a Chrysler station wagon off the unfinished Fort Duquesne
Bridge (back in 1964 when it was The Bridge to Nowhere).
This entertaining look at nearby bridges and their histories
has become a favorite of WQED audiences. It's a one-of-a-kind documentary about
people and structures that have helped make Pittsburgh such an unforgettable
place. |

The Mon, The Al & The O |
Author: |
WQED 13 |
format: |
VHS |
Info: |
|
Whatever happened to that B-25 that crashed into the
Monongahela in 1956? That's just one part of this slightly wacky documentary.
Most cities are happy with one river, but Pittsburgh is
blessed with three! And they're three dammed good ones: the Monongahela, the
Allegheny and the Ohio.
This somewhat zany program looks at the dams, the locks, the
history, and some of the good stories that are told on and about Pittsburgh's
rivers. We meet many people who work and play on these rivers: on tow boats,
barges, packet boats, the Gateway Clippers, and assorted pleasure boats. We go
to the Three Rivers Regatta, check out the Emsworth Locks, and see how
competitive rowing, boating and fishing are returning to these rivers after
decades of terrible pollution. We see how river water gets changed into drinking
water, and how some of the Allegheny becomes Iron City beer. It's the kind of
show that really makes a splash! |

Stuff That's Gone |
Author: |
WQED 13 |
format: |
DVD |
Info: |
|
There's just not enough room in Pittsburgh to keep everything,
and we've gotten rid of some things that people miss a lot. It's fun to be
reminded about stuff that's gone.
Remember Winkys hamburger joints? All the drive-in theaters
that used to be around here? The Gazebo restaurant in Shadyside? Did you ever
sit up late listening to Party Line on KDKA radio? Or stop to gawk, at
the KQV window? Remember when you could wave goodbye at the old Greater
Pittsburgh Airport? Did you now there once were some 15 inclines in this area?
And two great old amusement parks near McKeesport?
We celebrate all that - and more - in this program
called STUFF THAT'S GONE. It's a follow-up to WQED's phenomenally successful
THINGS THAT AREN'T THERE ANYMORE. It's a blast! (Or was that the Coraopolis
Bridge?) |
