NIH Requirement for IACUC Review of Grants

PHS policy states that PHS awarding units may not make an award involving live vertebrate animals unless the institution receiving the award provides verification of approval by the IACUC of those components of the application or proposal related to the care and use of animals.

To comply with the federally mandated grants review policy implemented through the IACUC, an investigator should download the “Grant Application Review Form” from the IACUC forms page (<http://www.iacuc.pitt.edu/forms/Forms.asp>), and submit the completed form and the methods and vertebrate animals sections of the grant application to the IACUC office (email: iacuc@pitt.edu). This should be done as soon as the investigator receives notice of a fundable score. The IACUC will review the grant application to assure that all procedures involving live animals are described in IACUC-approved protocols. The investigator may need to modify existing protocols or submit new protocols to the IACUC for this purpose. Timely submission of the grant, grant application review form, and relevant protocols is required to prevent delays in the awarding of grant monies.

Effective immediately, all approved PHS sponsored awards (new or competing renewals) involving animal research will need to secure an IACUC approval prior to the Office Of Research releasing any information to Research/Cost Accounting for an account number. Under no circumstances will the Office of Research forward an account number activation request to the Research/Cost Accounting Office without first verifying approval by the IACUC for those components of the respective sponsored award that relate to the care and use of animals.

Please contact your Office of Research Grants and Contracts representative, the Director of the Office of Research, or the IACUC Office if you have any questions regarding the grant review policy.
