RESEARCH:
My primary research interests lie in the area of organizational dynamics, team
development and systems. I have always been fascinated by what nursing leaders
can do to create dynamic, progressive work environments and the impact that has
on nursing outcomes. Beginning with my doctoral dissertation, which focused on
factors relating to job satisfaction in nursing, I have spent my career focusing
on these issues. In 1989 two of my colleagues and I developed A Transformational
Model for Professional Practice in Health Care Organizations. This
model provides the framework for integrating a health care system, balancing
competing priorities, developing leaders and staff, and maintaining an unerring
focus on the organization’s values and goals. My current research focuses
on the application and outcomes of this model.
TEACHING:
I have taught nursing leadership at Pitt as an adjunct faculty
member since 1982. After twenty four years of management and leadership
experience, I moved to a full time faculty position in 2005 in order
to coordinate the graduate programs in Nursing Leadership. In 1999
I founded a three tiered Leadership Academy which is designed to
prepare emerging, operational, and strategic leaders from across
the country with the leadership skills they need to adapt and excel
in a transformational health care environment. In addition, I have
conducted numerous seminars and lectures across the United States
, Finland , Canada , Greece , Italy , Australia and Japan .
SERVICE:
I am a member of the American Organization of Nurse Executives, for which
I also served as President from 1991-1992. I am a Fellow in the American Academy
of Nursing, and also a Wharton Fellow. Currently I serve as a member of the Magnet
Commission. Additional organizations to which I belong include Sigma Theta Tau
and the American Nurses Association. I have served on the Advisory Council for
Health and Human Services, as well as the Editorial Board for the Journal of
Nursing.
