RESEARCH:

I am currently enrolled in a doctoral program within the School of Education . I am completing a PhD in exercise physiology – health fitness and wellness promotion track. My research area of interest includes obesity and individuals with cardiovascular disease.

Teaching:
Currently I am the program coordinator for the Medical-Surgical Clinical Nurse Specialist program. I am the primary teacher for NURCNS 2850 CNS Role Implementation, NURCNS 2851 & NURCNS 2852 CNS Role Practicum I & II. This summer I will assume the primary teacher role for the undergraduate pathophysiology course. I also lecture to both graduate and undergraduate students concerning a variety of critical care topics, assist with skill development in skills lab for sophomore students, follow senior transition students, and teach 1 clinical rotation of the senior medical-surgical course each year. I maintain a current clinical practice working with the critical care CNSs at the UPMC-Oakland campus.

Service:
I am a member of the American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN) on both the national and local levels. On the local level, I have served in the officer roles of president and treasurer, and have served as a member of the workshop, program, and CCRN review committees. I am also a member of Sigma Theta Tau International and the National Association of Clinical Nurse Specialists (NACNS). I serve as a manuscript reviewer for Dimensions of Critical Care Nursing. I currently serve on numerous committees and task forces within the school of nursing and co-chair the Senate Committee for Student Affairs at the University. Most recently, I am involved with the implementation of the Doctorate of Nursing Practice and incorporating evidence-based practice into the curriculum at the School of Nursing .

BACKGROUND:
I have a strong background in critical and have been a critical care nurse for approximately 20 years and a clinical nurse specialist (CNS) for 13 years. I have been certified as a critical care nurse since 1987. I have presented at both regional and national nursing conferences on various critical care topics and topics concerning education of the CNS and published in these areas as well.
