John O'Donnell has been Director
at the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing Nurse Anesthesia
Program since 1994. He has been a CRNA since 1991 and an RN since
1983. He is an acknowledged
expert in human simulation education and has presented in this
area on the local, state,
and national levels.
He is currently pursuing a PhD in epidemiology
at the University of Pittsburgh
Graduate School of Public Health. Mr. O’Donnell has published
on numerous occasions in a variety of nursing and medical journals.
His areas of interest in addition
to human simulation education include problem based educational
approaches, procedural
sedation, and injury epidemiology related to medical error.
In
2003, Mr.O’Donnell was invited to sit on the Board of Directors
of the US National Anesthesia Patient Safety
Foundation and in 2004 was named Assistant Director for Nursing
Simulation at the WISER institute where he chairs a research committee.
For 2004-2005 he was the School of Nursing Distinguished Clinical
Scholar and he currently co-chairs the SEGUE (Simulation
Efforts in Graduate and undergraduate
Education) Committee at the University of
