RESEARCH:
Dr. Hravnak is pursuing research interests in the area of outcomes and health services research in critical care. In one study, she is examining racial disparities in patient outcomes following invasive coronary procedures. She is also a Co-Investigator on a grant funded by the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute "Myocardial Ischemia and Vasospasm in Aneurysmal Subarachnoid Hemorrhage". Lastly, she is evaluating the ability of various physiologic monitors to detect patient instability prior to deterioration
TEACHING:
Dr. Hravnak is a clinical faculty member at the University of Pittsburgh and currently teaches at the graduate level in the Acute Care Nurse Practitioner Program and the Medical Surgical Clinical Nurse Specialist Program. She is the primary teacher for NURNP 2104 Management of Acutely and Critically Ill Adults. She also teaches in NUR 2016 Physical Diagnosis and the cardiovascular module of NUR 20004 Pathophysiology. Within her courses, Dr. Hravnak utilizes the High Fidelity Human Simulator. In the simulation laboratory, students have the opportunity to apply didactic content and utilize critical thinking skills in simulated patient care scenarios
SERVICE:
Dr. Hravnak has over 30 years of critical care nursing experience including over ten years as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner in the Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Dr. Hravnak has collaborated in the design of Curriculum Guidelines and Program Standards for the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties. She was a member of the Board on Certification for Acute Care Nurse Practitioners of the American Nurses Credentialing Center from 1995-1998. She is a member of the American Association of Critical Care Nurses Advanced Practice Workgroup for 2000, 2001, and 2005 and contributed to the development of that organization's Scope of Practice and Standards of Care for Acute and Critical Care Clinical Nurse Specialists.
She is also a contributor to the 2006 revision of the Scope of Practice and Standards of Care for Acute Care Nurse Practitioners. She is a frequent reviewer for AACN Clinical Issues in Critical Care Nursing, Heart & Lung, and the American Journal of Critical Care. She is currently a member of the Allied Health Professionals Credentials Review Committee of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center-Health System since 1999 and a member of the Institutional Review Board since 2000. Among her honors and awards is her induction as a fellow in the American College of Critical Care Medicine, Society of Critical Care Medicine, and induction as a fellow in the American Academy of Nursing. She is also the recipient of the Society of Critical Care Medicine’s Norma J. Shoemaker Award for Excellence in Critical Care Nursing.
