International Molecular Epidemiology Task Force (IMETAF)

In 1993, IMETAF was established to assist nations acquire capabilities in molecular epidemiology.

The mission of the Task Force is:

  1. To facilitate the development and implementation of programs in molecular epidemiology in all regions of the world

  2. To promote advanced biotechnology transfer for scientific research and its integration into epidemiology, medicine and public health for disease prevention

Participating countries establish a National Scientific Committee with Government Advisors to interact with the international representatives and to direct the molecular epidemiology program for that nation. The structure assures that the activities related to the development of molecular epidemiology are integrated with other national health programs and leads to the establishment of appropriate health policy. Argentina and Mexcio were the first countries to organize National Scientific Committees for IMETAF. They are currently developing National Molecular Epidemiology Programs.
