Course Information
This course is designed to provide a basic competence in cardiovascular physiology and psychological influences on cardiovascular physiology. Cardiovascular pathophysiology will be discussed as a tool for understanding normal physiology as well as for its own sake. A lecture and proseminar approach will be used. The instructors will lecture on one topic per week, and the instructors and students will then discuss a primary reading on that topic. A laboratory session each week will also provide an introductory knowledge to a number of psychophysiological measurement techniques and data analytic approaches. Students are expected to complete the assigned readings before each lecture, discussion and laboratory session. For each discussion session, students will be required to email 3 questions concerning the reading to the instructors prior to the discussion session.

Grades will be based on midterm and final (nonculmulative) tests (70%), a student-led seminar at the end of the term (20%), and on class-participation and mastery of laboratory techniques (10%). For student-led seminars, each student will give a brief presentation on a topic of her or his choosing and will facilitate a discussion of an empirical paper related to that topic. Each student will also submit a brief paper related to her or his class presentation. This paper can be either a critique of the paper discussed in class or it can be a research proposal. The critique or proposal should be no longer than 5 pages. This paper is due on the day of the final exam.

The required text is Stress and Health: Biological and Psychological Interactions (2005, 2nd Edition) by W.R. Lovallo.
