The dissertation proposal is starting to come together. Also, I was recently promoted to Research Assistant at JSERI.
Say 'hi' to my Mom! She is a piano teacher in Germantown, MD.
As a student in the Intelligent Systems Program, I do research in Computer-Supported Learning Systems. My interests include Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning, Case-Based Reasoning, and other related fields.
My goal is to build an intelligent tutoring system for analysis of dilemmas in bioengineering ethics. Engineers, and bioengineers in particular, must know how to address ethical problems that arise in their work, and must therefore be trained in ethics case analysis. While Intelligent Tutoring Systems have been used to teach subjects such as geometry and algebra, they face challenges in helping students learn in ill-defined domains like professional ethics.
My work aims to respond to these challenges by restructuring the learning experience with the aid of technology. Specifically, instead of the traditional one-on-one tutoring environment, we believe that students can help each other learn this complex subject through collaboration, and that they can do so most effectively with intelligently generated feedback. This research is a joint effort with Kevin Ashley and Rosa Pinkus, partially supported by the National Science Foundation (award #0203307).
Our previous project was PETE (the Professional Ethics Tutoring Environment). PETE is a web application aimed at helping bioengineering students practice ethics case analysis. NSF also funded this research (award #9720341).
PETE is unique among software for ethics pedagogy thanks to its combination of features:
