Dissertation Research

My Ph.D. research, completed in 1999 at the University of Pittsburgh, was in the area of case-based reasoning (CBR) and its application to ethical reasoning.  An abstract of my dissertation is found below.  My Ph.D. advisor was Kevin Ashley whose work is well known in the field of case-based reasoning, particularly as it applies to legal reasoning. The rest of my Ph.D. committee was Bruce Buchanan, Martha Pollack, and Manuela Veloso.

Assessing the Relevance of Cases and Principles using Operationalization Techniques

Abstract

As part of my exploration into how abstract principles can be applied to specific fact situations, I developed and experimented with SIROCCO (System for Intelligent Retrieval of Operationalized Cases and COdes), a Case-Based Reasoning (CBR) retrieval and analysis system applied to the domain of engineering ethics. SIROCCO is intended to retrieve decided engineering ethics cases and previously applied ethics codes to assist in the analysis of new cases. My study of a large corpus of engineering ethics cases revealed a set of operationalization techniques that provide the cornerstone for SIROCCO's functionality. Ultimately, SIROCCO will act as a tool for engineers and engineering students in improving access to an on-line resource of engineering ethics experience. In my dissertation I report on the underlying architecture and language of SIROCCO, on the world-wide web tool I developed to perform case acquisition (www.pitt.edu/~bmclaren/ethics), and on experiments I performed to test my hypothesis that SIROCCO's operationalization techniques improve the accuracy of code and case retrieval.

My dissertation can be downloaded as a  Word file  or as a .pdf file  ( Intro   Body)

Or you can contact me (bmclaren+@pitt.edu) to obtain a hardcopy.

My dissertation program can be run from: The SIROCCO web page
