Computers and the Internet have become vital for research and teaching in the biological sciences. With this in mind, the Department established and maintains a Howard Hughes Gant-funded computing laboratory for undergraduate education and research. The laboratory is equipped with numerous late-model Power Macintosh computers and a wide variety of software for biology and general use, and is located on the first floor of Clapp Hall (consult our building floor plan for precise location within Clapp Hall). The laboratory is staffed by trained personnel and managed by Dr. Eric Polinko. Currently, the lab is open according to the following schedule (Fall 2007):
In addition, the University's Department of Computing and Information Services maintains a large number of labs for student use, equipped with Macintosh and Intel-standard PCs. Timesharing access on unix and VMS systems is available to all students. Various credit or non-credit courses and workshops offered by the University help students learn skills such as word processing, electronic mail, database use, Web site construction and management, and Internet access. The University of Pittsburgh has an interconnected and integrated centrally operated computing network. This network, particularly with its access to the advanced computing facilities of the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center (PSC), permits investigators University-wide to use an extensive network of facilities and offers outstanding opportunities for quantitative computing in the biological sciences. The PSC also funds a variety of studies in structural biology and the modeling of complex biological systems. Howard Hughes Computing Laboratories
