Clapp Hall was erected in 1956 and was originally the home of the the Department of Chemistry and Department of Biophysics (now part of the Department of Biological Sciences). Clapp Hall is named after George Hubbard Clapp, Pitt class of 1877, and President of the University of Pittsburgh from 1907 until his death in 1953. Clapp Hall was originally slated to be built adjacent to the Cathedral of Learning, on the south side of 5th Avenue, between the Cathedral and Heinz Chapel. Concerns over the weight of the 3-building complex prompted the decision to build Clapp Hall across the street. The Department of Biological Sciences occupies the Ground, First, Second, and Third floors of Clapp Hall. Below is a map to locating Clapp Hall on the University of Pittsburgh campus. To locate a specific room within Clapp Hall, see our floor plans. See also Langley Hall and Crawford Hall.
