Professor Smetanka specializes
in the areas of health law, social security disability, and trial and
appellate practice, and is interested in the provision of legal aid to
low-income clients. Prior to assuming her position in the School
of Law, she practiced law for
13 years. During this time, she served as Allegheny
County assistant district
attorney, clerked for the Hon. William F. Cercone
of the Pennsylvania Superior Court, and was an associate with the Pittsburgh
law firm of Burns, White and Hickton. Professor Smetanka is on the board of directors of both
Neighborhood Legal Services and the Legal Aid Society of Pittsburgh. She is
an elected member of the council of the Health Law Section of the Allegheny
County Bar Association. She has published in the area of appellate practice
and has chaired both the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania Appellate Court
Rules Committee and the Appellate Practice Committee of the Allegheny
County Bar Association. Professor Smetanka
teaches Health Law Clinic and Health Law Practicum: Policy and Procedures.
She also is the advisor to the Health Law Moot Court team.
