Dr. Erlen is on the faculty of the Department
of Health Promotion and Development in the School
of Nursing. She is the
co-author of the book, Nursing Process, Nursing Diagnosis, Nursing Knowledge: Avenues to Autonomy. Dr. Erlen is a reviewer for the Journal of the American
Academy of Nurse Practitioners and serves as a consultant on ethics
articles written for RN. She also writes a column on ethics for Orthopaedic Nursing. Dr. Erlen is currently the principal investigator of a 4½
federally funded study "Adherence to Protease Inhibitors" (1R01
NR04749). Her multidisciplinary research team is testing the effect of a
telephone intervention based on social cognitive and self-efficacy theories
to improve adherence in persons living with HIV infection who are
prescribed combination antiretroviral therapy. Dr. Erlen's
research reflects my interest in ethics, adherence, and quality of life.
She recently completed a project funded by the National Institute of
Nursing Research focusing on the quality of care provided to hospitalized
patients with AIDS. Dr. Erlen has been a member
of the faculty at the University
of Pittsburgh since 1983
teaching students at all levels. She has focused her teaching primarily in
the area of ethics in nursing and health care. She teaches courses in the
doctoral program aimed at assisting students to develop their skills in grantsmanship and manuscript preparation. She also
advises doctoral dissertation students. Currently ,
Dr. Erlen is the Coordinator of the Doctoral
Program, as well as the Associate Director and Director, Development and
Dissemination Core of the Center for Research in Chronic Disorders in the School
of Nursing. In addition, she
serves as the Acting-Co-Director of Research Projects for the Center for
Bioethics and Health Law. Dr. Erlen is an elected
member of the American Academy
of Nursing and a member of the American Nurses' Association, National
League for Nursing, Society for Health and Human Values, the Hastings
Center, the Association for the
Care of Children's Health, and the Association of Nurses in AIDS care.
