A&S GSO Committees

The Chairs of A&S GSO Committees are chosen at the April GSO Council Meeting.  However, any A&S graduate student may serve as a member of these committees.  If you are interested in joining one of these committees please contact the AA. or the Chair of the committee listed below for more information.

Teaching Award

The teaching award committee determines the applications process, solicits nominations, reviews applications and plans for the reception for the Elizabeth Baranger Excellence in Teaching Award for A&S Graduate Students.

Grad Expo

The Grad Expo committee plans and carries out the annual Grad Expo each Spring. The Grad Expo is a yearly exposition of grad student research The committee meets in the Fall but the bulk of the work occurs in the Spring semester.

Finance

The committee will be responsible for formulating recommendations to be voted on by the full Council. Responsibilities will include: an annual budget; regulations governing the Travel Grants; review of the financial transactions and recordkeeping performed by the AA; and recommendations for the disbursement of forfeited departmental funds and emergency funds when appropriate.

Happy Hour

This committee plans Happy Hours sponsored by A&S GSO. Please let them know if you have any suggestions about where to hold Happy Hours. They are always looking for new ideas.

External Committees

Appointments to external are voted on at the April A&S GSO Council meeting. However, there are periodically openings during the year. If you would like to volunteer to serve on one of these committees, if an opening become available or if you would like to be considered in April please contact the AA.

Graduate Student and Professional Association (GPSA)

3 Appointments

GPSA is the university-wide graduate student government; it represents all the graduate and professional schools at Pitt, including A&S. GPSA appoints representatives to various university committees, including Senate and Board of Trustees subcommittees. If you are interested in serving on university committees such as the Library Committee, Transportation or University Computing, please contact the Vice President for Committees of GPSA. Arts & Sciences Council

2 Appointments

This committee consists of the dean, twelve faculty members, two A&S graduate students, and two A&S undergraduate students. The A&SC acts for the Arts and Sciences in the intervals between meetings of the full faculty, prepares the agenda for such meetings, and consults with the Dean on long-range budget planning.

Arts & Sciences Planning and Budget Committee

3 Appointments

The Arts and Sciences Planning and Budgeting Committee (A&S-PBC) is comprised of six faculty, three staff, three graduate students, and the Dean and Graduate and Undergraduate Deans of A&S. This Committee advises the A&S Dean with regard to planning and annual budget allocations within A&S, assists him or her in reviewing the priority of requests that involve significant new funding, and helps to determine budgetary guidelines for A&S. Most recently, this committee has been responsible for long-range budget planning. The graduate student representatives are one from each of Humanities, Social Sciences and Natural sciences.

Arts & Sciences Graduate Studies

5 Appointments

This committee advises the graduate dean on matters of concern to A&S graduate students. Five graduate students and six faculty members sit on this committee. Concerns include curriculum and instructional programs, admissions, degree requirements, and other academic matters.
