A Guide to the Guide
A Guide to the Foster Hall Collection, compiled 1988-89 and updated February-April 1995, provides the location, description and known provenance for each of the most significant items or groups of materials in the Collection. It also lists any reference aids that are available. It is intended for in-house, ready reference use. This on-line version of the Guide is an abbreviated version of the printed document; references that would be of no immediate use to the on-line user have been omitted.
Each of the ten divisions of the Guide begins with a brief description, and its own table of categories of materials. Each category consists of a description of the group of items.
It should be mentioned that while two-thirds of the Collection can be accessed through PITTCAT, the University of Pittsburgh's online catalogue (including all books, serials, music scores, songbooks, songsters, programs and pamphlets catalogued before 1992), PITTCAT does not include the holdings in other formats, materials acquired after 1992, or the analytical information in the card index compiled in the 1930s..
Throughout this Guide, the Stephen Foster Memorial building is abbreviated SFM; the Foster Hall Collection of the Center for American Music is abbreviated FHC.
