Amizade at the Navajo Nation

 

Location:    Tuba City, Arizona (small town)


Site Leaders:    Dan Behrend and Gemma Graven


Organization's Mission:    The Navajo Nation is working to have the Navajo recognized as a sovereign nation by promoting economic self-sufficiency, while maintaining cultural, social, and traditional values. They seek to sustain and develop Navajo cultural identity.


Nature of the Work:    Working is community schools on various tutoring projects that benefit Navajo children.


Transportation:    Commercial airline and on-site van rental in Arizona; approximately 4 hours by air and 3 hours of driving.


Accommodations:    Sleeping will be dorm style at the school. Breakfast and lunch will be served in a cafeteria and dinner will be prepared by the group.


Possible Activities:    Time to talk with kids and adults in the Navajo nation. A lot of personal and cultural interaction.


Number of Participants:    20


Cost:    $570 per person*


Duration of the trip:    Tentative plans are to leave Pittsburgh Saturday, March 2 and return on Sunday, March 10


Special Considerations:    Tetanus must be current before volunteering at the schools. We will need to do a lot of fundraising.


            There are 4 spots reserved for 21 year olds willing to drive a van.


    * Program cost includes Student Government Board’s funding.  Cost may fluctuate based on airfare.
