Silvia just started her research in the fall of 2005, continuing
the work of Drs. Nagatomi and Toosi. She will be working on urinary bladder
wall mechanics. The function of the urinary bladder is to store urine and
to void by contracting the smooth muscle. Disorders like spinal cord injury
(SCI) and diabetes can lead to severe bladder dysfunctions. It is suggested
that a strong relation must exist between tissue morphology, mechanical
properties of the wall, and the health state of the bladder. The goal is
to determine the mechanical properties of healthy and diseased urinary bladder
wall tissue, in inactive, passive and active state, and from this develop
a structural constitutive model of the tissue.
